Apples heal when eaten. To eat one, one needs to hold it in their hand then left click (which is why one cannot dig using an apple). They can be placed with right click, just like almost any other node.
They can be obtained from apple trees; there is a 25% chance that a tree grown from a apple tree sapling bears apples, making apples renewable. An apple drops as an item when there is no tree trunk nearby, unless it was placed by a player.
Apple trees that have grown naturally (either by a sapling or from the map generator) are able to regrow their apples once they have been collected. Regrowth will stop when the apple tree has been cut down completely (no more leaves).
